Are you the type of person that appreciates a mix of activity, local exploration and relaxation when on vacation? We’re of the same ilk and have found intriguing new resorts around the world worth looking into. One common denominator? Each property has numerous tennis courts on site.
Rather than create a generic list of “the top ten resorts or academies”, we organised our findings based on the main purpose of your trip. In truth, there is no objective top 10 ranking - it all depends on what you’re looking for. In our experience there is more nuance to choosing a location than simply ensuring you’ll be able to hit while on your trip.
As a result, we’ve broken our list into 3 categories.
The best tennis resorts to travel to if you want to:
Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy
It goes without saying that the pro you’re most likely to see at this facility is Rafa Nadal himself. You’re also likely to encounter Carlos Moya who has become a regular part of Rafa’s coaching team and has the role of Technical Director at the Academy.
You might expect the facility to be full of red clay courts, with coaches imparting the wisdom that has made Nadal the best player of all time on clay but beyond tennis, you can book packages to provide instruction in running, triathlon, paddle and cycling as well. Is Mallorca a bit too far for you? There have been recent reports that Rafa plans on opening a second location in Boca Raton Florida in the near future.
La Quinta Resort
There is an obvious time of the year to visit the La Quinta Resort in Indian Wells: early March when the BNP Paribas Masters Series is taking place less than 4 miles from the property. Before an event that hosts both the ATP and WTA tours there is often a situation where there are more pros than court times available - even in a big venue like the Tennis Garden. Thus, coaches will book other courts in the area for extra practice.
Even if you haven’t seen your favourite player hitting at your hotel, it’s often free to check out practice sessions at tournament venues before the tournament gets underway.
Jumeirah Beach Hotel
Mouratoglou Academy
Situated in the South of France, this academy was founded in 1996 by Serena Williams’ current coach: Patrick Mouratoglou. While his fame as a coach is mainly derived from his six-year partnership with Williams, he has an illustrious list of players he’s worked with in the past: Grigor Dimitrov, Jeremy Chardy, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Marcos Baghdatis. Beyond players working with Mouratoglou, the likes of Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Milos Raonic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alizé Cornet have used the facilities for training.
Needless to say, if you’re keen to improve your game while having a reasonably high probability of seeing some of the best tennis players in the world (especially during the Europe-based clay court season), this is an option worth looking into.
Punta Mita
If you aren’t familiar with Punta Mita and the idea of spending time on a somewhat secluded island in Mexico with luxury resorts and villas, beaches, golf and tennis facilities is attractive to you, it’s worth looking into further. Now that you’ve chosen your vacation destination and pulled the trigger on your hotel booking and airline tickets, the next step is packing. Airlines everywhere have become increasingly (and exceedingly!) stingy with baggage allotments for economy tickets. In order to be on the safe side and avoid paying an unanticipated surcharge, why not travel with stylish, versatile bags you can use for any activity or occasion. The Epirus collection was designed for active living, including travelling with tennis rackets. Our extensive research has shown that they fit the guidelines issued by all major airlines.
